SOUTHERN AFRICAN AMERICAN ROOTWORK: A TOOL FOR SURVIVAL
DAEUS folk (Descendants of Africans Enslaved in theUnited States) forged a new paradigm of spirituality and healing because of their collective experience of racial injustice, inequality and oppression in the US. This paradigm is known as Rootwork, Hoodoo, and Conjure, to name a few. Rootwork in the American South originated out of the struggle to maintain a relationship rooted in ancestral guidance and reverence despite Protestant forced religion on the enslaved Africans. These rituals of resistance were not only used fo rprotection from, banishing or controlling one’s enemy but also for healing. It is a DAEUS form of shamanism. Due to miseducation and the media’s negative portrayal of any African based spiritual system, many avoid learning the true nature of this practice. This class will focus on the history as well as the importance of ancestral reverence. It will also discuss the alchemy of using herbs, mediumship, tools, and time to produce powerful Rootwork results.
